Special Topics in Calamity Physics

Ummm….Ok,  I won’t judge a book by its cover.

“Dad alwyas said a person must have a magnificent reason for writing out his or her Life Story and expecting anyone to read it. ‘Unless your name is something along the lines of Mozart, Matisse, Churchill, Che Guevara, or Bond – James Bond – you best spend your free time finger painting of playing shuffleboard, for no one, with the exception of your flabby-armed mother with stiff hair and a mashed-potato way of looking at you, will want to hear the particulars of your pitiable existance….” – Special Topics in Calamaty Physics, by Marish Pesse

You’ve just read the first few lines in my latest literary venture.  My, how generations change!

The Times and USA Today wrote rave reviews about this book, aligning the author with well-known novelists that are still obscure to this novice.  But of course the quote from Vogue hit home:

“Wity and exuberatnt, it is part coming-of-age, part road-trip adventure, part idiosyncratic Great Books survey, with dashes of romantic comedy and murder mystery thrown in.” — Vogue

Although young, author Marisha Pessel now has this New York Times Best Seller under her belt and won over the veteran critics.

You’re probably thinking to yourself at this point, “but what is the book about?”  Honestly, I still don’t know.  It’s the tale of a brilliant young girl that goes away to school in a small town  after a “series of inexplicable events” that “[results] in an explosion of energy, light, and heartbreak.”

The book was suggested by a friend whom I revere for his, yes HIS, literary scholarship, and as you’ve read, the critics applaud her writing.  Maybe I’ll pick up a thing or two ;)

I can’t wait to dive in!

You’ve Come A Long Way, Maybe

Les (@lesliesanchez), I love that your voice comes through so clearly in your new book. A little sass makes politics so much more interesting!

Referencing unexpected quotes against women and inspiring stats in support of female mobility, Leslie articulates exactly how women are perceived and the ripple effects of the media’s message on our progress. So if our equality is still in question, how do we overcome the obstacles she outlines? I’m reading on to find out.

Are You In A Dip?

In a slump?  Thinking about changing careers, quitting your job, moving on…

BUT

You’re not sure if it’s the right move.

Of course you’re hesitant.

Take the a couple hours to read Seth Godin’s The Dip for some insight on how you can strategize the next best move for you.  It might just be to stick with what you’re doing, but it very well could be in your best interest to QUIT.

80 pages. Read it.

I’ve been burned by too many books to pick one up without a referral.  I’d definitely take a suggestion from G if you’re looking for a beach book.

Style is important, but So is Your Intelligence

Stlye is important, but so is your intelligence. The pretty package doesn’t mean anything unless there is a quality, thoughtful gift (ie mind, soul, humor, wit) inside. The Economist is a great resource to catch up on current events. On the fashion front, in my opinion, tan lines are tacky on your chest. While tanning either undo your straps or buy a bandeau top. Bandeaus are my fav, but I understand they only really work with small boobs. For those of you who need the support of straps, I don’t feel sorry for you, you have boobs :)

Meet Kevin

This is Kevin, a writer for the Daily Show. I was in awe because I think the writing on that show is so witty.  I’m looking forward to reading his commentary on dating in his book (which I requested signed and highlighted). He actually wore this shirt running around the floor of Congress in protest until he got kicked out!
